Bacteria Forces Closure of Two Arcadia beaches (Jul 08, 2011)

EDMOND, Okla. (AP) — Edmond officials have closed two beaches at Arcadia Lake because of the presence of E. coli bacteria in the water.

Officials said Thursday the lake remains open for water recreation in areas other than the beaches located at Edmond Park and Spring Creek Park.

City spokeswoman Ashleigh Clark says results of tests done at the beaches indicated high levels of bacteria, prompting officials to take immediate precautions.

E. coli is related to animal contamination. With very little rain, a lack of wind for circulation and the shallow depths of these particular areas, the water stagnates quickly.

Clark says the areas will be reopened as soon as officials are notified that conditions have returned to normal.
