Weekly Arts & Entertainment Highlights (Jul 21, 2011)

There’s something for just about everyone this weekend in Central Oklahoma, including one of the most unique kid’s races on three wheels.

The Young Producers summer camp opens “All Shook Up” on Thursday at the Sooner Theatre. The “juke box” musical contains two dozen songs from the catalogue of Elvis Presley’s career constructed into a narrative for the stage. There are performances every evening this weekend as well as matinées Friday and Saturday.

The race is on in Old Town Moore this Friday at this year’s Big Wheel Nationals. Kids ages 4 to 8 can bring their trikes to the Moore Community Center to race for prizes, the championship trophy and of course, bragging rights. There will also be a Best in Show where racers can show off their tricked out rides.

You’ll find a variety of regional artists and crafters at the Bricktown Art Festival on Saturday and Sunday. The festival takes place between the Redhawks baseball stadium and the Bricktown Canal. If you make it to the festival, be sure to stop by the silent auction benefiting the Limbs for Life Foundation.

There’s a lot going on at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum this Saturday. The museum is holding an event in honor of the National Day of the American Cowboy with live music, Western film screenings, roping demonstrations and story telling in the museum’s Children’s Cowboy Corral. Also, Amazing Race contestant and Oklahoma Cowboy Jet McCoy will take part in a special Q&A and the winner of the Miss Rodeo Oklahoma Scholarship Pageant will be crowned.

And if you’re an artist looking to possible take on another project, be sure to consider applying for the Manifesto upcycled art competition before midnight Sunday. Selected artists will be given raw materials, a theme and two months to create a work for the Manifesto festival in mid-October.

You can find these events – and many others – in our online event calendar here.
