Tulsa Sets 1-day Record for Water Usage (Jul 18, 2011)

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Tulsa has set a new daily water usage record and city officials say if the current usage trend continues, mandatory water restrictions could be put into place.

Residents in Oklahoma's second-largest city used 204.1 million gallons on Saturday. That breaks the previous record of 190.9 million gallons set on a July day in 1999.

City Water and Sewer Department Director Clayton Edwards says Sunday usage fell to 202.54 million gallons. He says the spike in water usage over the weekend was unexpected.

Edwards says the city is asking citizens to use water wisely and "a more restrictive policy" regarding water usage could be adopted if daily water usage continues to approach or exceed 200 million gallons. He did not say what that policy might entail.
