Governor Schedules Special House Election (Jul 26, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Gov. Mary Fallin has set Feb. 14 as the date for a special election for the vacant District 1 seat in the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

The seat became vacant after first-term Republican Rep. Rusty Farley of Haworth died earlier this month. District 1 covers McCurtain County in southeastern Oklahoma.

An executive order released by the governor's office on Tuesday set the filing period for candidates from Aug. 22 to Aug. 24. The primary election is scheduled for Nov. 8 and the general election will occur on Feb. 14. If no primary election is required, the general election will instead be held on Nov. 8.

Fallin spokesman Alex Weintz says Fallin signed the executive order on Monday before she underwent arthroscopic surgery on her left hip Tuesday.
