House Speaker Critical of DHS Investigation Speed (Jul 27, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma House Speaker Kris Steele is criticizing the Department of Human Services for its failure to release a report on last month's death of a 5-year-old girl.

In a press release issued Tuesday, Steele accuses DHS of a "status quo of excuses and delays."

Serenity Deal was found beaten to death on June 4 at the home of her father, 31-year-old Sean Brooks, who has been charged with first-degree murder in Oklahoma County.

A report by the Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth shows DHS officials had placed the girl with her father despite evidence that she previously suffered injuries while in his care.

DHS Director Howard Hendrick says the probe is ongoing and that the agency is waiting for court transcripts.
