Black Tulsa Officer Sues Over MLK Assignment (Jul 29, 2011)

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — A black police captain has sued the city and the department for allegedly forcing him to represent Tulsa police during a 2010 Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade.

In a federal lawsuit, Capt. Walter Busby alleges department officials ordered him to attend the parade on behalf of the police department because he's black and because his presence would be an endorsement of police actions in the black community.

Busby also alleged that even though he obeyed his orders, he was given a poor performance review and a shift change after he protested the assignment.

The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages and a declaration that officials violated his constitutional rights.

Tulsa Police Department spokesman Leland Ashley said Thursday he didn't have a response to the filing on behalf of officials.
