Utility Suspends Service Cutoffs During Aug. (Aug 02, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma Gas and Electric has announced that the utility will not disconnect residential electrical service for nonpayment of bills during August.

OG&E spokesman Brian Alford said in a news release Tuesday the utility hasn't been disconnecting service in the past month because of the record-setting heat and will not resume disconnects in August.

The Oklahoma Climatological Survey announced Monday that July was the hottest month in state history. Records date to 1895.

OG&E is also asking customers to take steps to reduce the amount of electricity they use to reduce the strain on the system.

The steps including raising thermostats a few degrees higher, turn off unnecessary lights and avoid using electrical appliances and equipment — especially during the peak demand hours between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
