OKC Students Endure Heat as Classes Begin (Aug 02, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — While most Oklahoma children are spending the final weeks of summer break at home, Oklahoma City public school children are attending classes in triple-digit temperatures.

Students there returned to school on Monday, a few weeks earlier than usual and during a weeks-long heat wave that has contributed to 12 deaths.

District spokeswoman Tierney Tinnin said Tuesday officials had no idea a heat wave would be going on when they decided last year to switch to a continuous learning calendar, but she said they're not encountering any issues they don't usually see.

Tinnin says 136 of the district's 2,501 classrooms had air-conditioning problems Tuesday. Students are usually moved to other rooms until repairs are made.

Tinnin says school buses aren't air-conditioned but bottled water is available for students and bus drivers.
