USDA Announces $500K in Grants for NE Okla. (Aug 18, 2011)

MIAMI, Okla. - The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a series of grants Thursday that will invest $3 million in rural businesses in Native American communities in 15 states, with Oklahoma receiving nearly $500,000.

The USDA's Rural Business Enterprise Grant (RBEG) program will administer $151,300 dollars to the City of Miami, $200,000 to the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, and $144,836 to the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma.

"All of these grants work with training their respective work forces, so that Native American workers are better-equipped to take advantage of diverse and changing job opportunities," said USDA Senior Advisor for Tribal Affairs Janie Hipp.

The Agriculture Department says RBEG grants will also be used for transportation improvements and planning in the Seminole Nation.
