OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma Corporation Commissioner Jeff Cloud says he's resigning his post after nine years on the regulatory panel. Cloud announced Thursday he is stepping down to "pursue opportunities in the private sector."

The three-member Corporation Commission regulates public utilities, railroads and the state's oil and gas industry.

The Republican was first elected to a six-year term in 2002 and re-elected in 2008. His current term is scheduled to end in 2014.Cloud considered a run for an open congressional seat in 2010, but withdrew from the race because of health concerns.

Cloud did not say when his resignation would take effect, but says he plans to work closely with Gov. Mary Fallin as she prepares to name a successor.
