Governor Tours Oklahoma City Grass Fire Damage (Sep 01, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Gov. Mary Fallin is touring areas of Oklahoma City that have been affected by grass fires in recent days.

Fallin on Thursday thanked firefighters, first responders and Oklahoma National Guard members for their efforts to control the fires, which have destroyed about 30 homes and consumed more than 5,000 acres.

Fallin noted the expense involved with using National Guard personnel and helicopters to help fight the fires, but she said officials aren't holding back when it comes to using those resources.

The Blackhawk helicopters equipped with 600-gallon water buckets have helped crews on the ground battle fires that burn into tree tops and rough terrain.

Fallin also urged people to heed the burn ban that's in place, and be careful not to discard burning materials outside.
