UPDATE: Okla. Businessman Joins Congressional Race (Sep 06, 2011)

CLAREMORE, Okla. (AP) - Adair County businessman Markwayne Mullin has formally kicked off his campaign for the Republican nomination in the 2nd Congressional District in eastern Oklahoma.

Mullin formally announced his candidacy Tuesday outside a family-run business in Claremore, pledging to run a grassroots campaign.

The owner of Mullin Plumbing, he joins a crowded GOP field seeking to replace U.S. Rep. Dan Boren, the only Democrat in Oklahoma's congressional delegation. Boren announced this summer he would not run for re-election.

Other Republicans seeking the post are state Rep. George Faught of Muskogee, former Tishomingo Mayor Dustin Rowe, and retired Lt. Col. Dakota Wood.

No Democrats have formally announced plans to seek the post, but among those considering a run is assistant U.S. Attorney Rob Wallace, a former LeFlore County district attorney.
