Okla. Could Get $488M for Road Projects Under Jobs Plan (Sep 12, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - President Barack Obama's plan to invest $50 billion on highway and transit modernization projects would include $488 million for Oklahoma.

Obama outlined the plan in a televised speech on Thursday.

The White House announced that the proposal would put hundreds of thousands of construction workers back on the job nationwide and the state's share could support a minimum of 6,400 jobs.

The plan also would invest $35 billion to prevent the layoffs of 280,000 teachers and support the hiring of firefighters and police officers nationwide. Officials said Oklahoma would receive about $359 million in funds to support up to 5,900 jobs for educators and those who work as first responders.Other proposed funding for Oklahoma would include $267 million for school infrastructure investment and $57.5 million for community college investment.
