Okla. Tribal Members Can Vote Early Saturday (Sep 13, 2011)

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) - Cherokee Nation members can vote early in the special election for principal chief beginning Saturday.

Tribal officials say early voting will be allowed at the tribe's election commission office on Saturday, and on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week.

Voters will try again Sept. 24 to elect a principal chief. The tribe's Supreme Court threw out results of the original June 25 election after it couldn't be determined with mathematical certainty whether former Chief Chad Smith or longtime tribal council member Bill John Baker had won.

Both men were declared the winner twice.

Smith's term in office expired Aug. 14 and Deputy Chief Joe Crittenden was sworn in as acting principal chief.

Crittenden will resume his regular duties after a winner of the Sept. 24 election is declared.
