Lawmakers Examine Legislative Spending Limits (Sep 22, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY - Members of the House Appropriations and Budget Committee were told today Oklahoma would benefit from the implementation of stricter spending limits.

The comments came during an interim study requested by State Rep. Elise Hall (R-Oklahoma City). She says the issue was brought to her attention during the 2010 campaign when constituents expressed concern that government spending was growing more rapidly than the overall economy.

Voters approved a spending limitation in 1985 that restricts the annual growth of the state budget to 12 percent. Hall says she wants to lower that limit to 7 percent.

The Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs says government expenditures grew by 72 percent from 2001 to 2010, while private earnings only grew by 41 percent.
