Weekly Arts and Entertainment Highlight (Oct 13, 2011)

This week’s events focus on art galleries, with openings, closings, and interesting presentations across the greater metro area.

It’s the last weekend to see “Passages” at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. An interactive Biblical exhibit spanning over 14,000 square feet, “Passages” features Dead Sea Scroll text, illuminated manuscripts, and a portion of the Gutenberg Bible. Eleven themed rooms display the history of the Bible, including a re-creation of the cave where St. Jerome translated it into Latin. “Passages” closes on Sunday the 16th, and afterwards a portion of the exhibit will be on display in Vatican City.

In Design: The Art of John-Paul Philippé is on display at [Artspace] at Untitled in Oklahoma City beginning October 14th. Philippé creates artwork ranging from paintings and woodworks to installation art, and created installation pieces specific to the space at [Artspace] Untitled. Philippé is from Oklahoma, but is now based in New York. The opening reception is from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday.

G. Patrick Riley hosts a leather mask workshop at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee on October 15th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Riley is an Oklahoman mask maker, and has pieces in collections at the Oklahoma State Capital, the John F. Kennedy Center, and the Arkansas Arts Center. Riley’s current exhibition called Magical Mystery Masks: The Art of G. Patrick Riley includes the mask he made for Lady Gaga’s Oklahoma City performance in July of this year.

There are also several performances during the next week.

The Ghostlight Theatre Club opens their show “The Man from Earth”, a stage adaptation of a Jerome Bixby sci-fi film, on October 14th.

Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Twin Sister, and Skating Polly perform on the 14th at the University of Oklahoma.

35 Music Exchange takes place at Brother’s in Norman on the 15th, bringing together artists from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and Norman. The Exchange is hosted by Norman Music Festival, 35 Denton, and The DOJO.

Other events of interest are the Mistletoe Market, Parade of Homes, and the Aviation Festival and Fly-In.
