Weekly Arts and Entertainment Highlight (Oct 20, 2011)

This week’s events include a highly anticipated craft show, and a museum opening years in the making.

An Affair of the Heart takes place this weekend from October 21st through the 23rd at the State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. What started with eight women in February of 1985 is now one of the biggest craft shows in the nation, taking place four times a year. Vendors from across the country sell arts, crafts, antiques, collectibles, and gourmet foods, this weekend from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in Norman holds the grand opening of the Stuart Wing and reinstallation of the Adkins’ Collection on the 22nd from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum has been under construction since 2009, and the renovation of the 1971 building brings the exhibition space of the Stuart Wing to approximately 27,000 square feet. The new space houses the Adkins Gallery featuring The Adkins’ Collection, a private collection of Taos and Native American art from the Southwest. Admission to the museum is free on Saturday and Sunday.

Jack Gibbons performs at Oklahoma City University on October 23rd at 3 p.m. Gibbons is a Gershwin specialist, and has performed annual all-Gershwin concerts at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London since 1990. He has also performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and Royal Albert Hall. Gibbons recorded the award-winning “Authentic George Gershwin” series in the 90’s, which now has four volumes. Most recently, he is the Artist-in-Residence at Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia.

Bill Moyers speaks about his career in journalism and documentary film making at Oklahoma City University October 26th at 7:30 p.m.

The University of Oklahoma theater department performs “Sunday in the Park with George” at 3 p.m. on Sunday the 23rd, and at 8 p.m. on the 26th.

Other upcoming events include performances at The Opolis, the musical Girls’ Night, and a screening of “The World According to Monsanto.”
