Cole: Troop Withdrawal "Diplomatic Defeat" for U.S. (Oct 21, 2011)

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) strongly criticized today’s decision by the Obama administration to begin recalling American troops from Iraq by the end of the year.

The announcement ends months of wrangling over whether the U.S. would maintain a force there to help train Iraqis. There are currently almost 40,000 American service personnel in Iraq.

The Fourth District Republican called the announcement a major set-back to the objective of establishing a democratic ally in the war on terror, and said it represents a political victory for Mr. Obama, but a diplomatic defeat for the U-S.

Cole also said, quote, “the clear winners in today’s announcement are Iran and al-Qaeda.”
