Okla. Student Hurt During Science Experiment (Oct 26, 2011)

DEL CITY, Okla. (AP) - Authorities say a Del City middle school student was injured when a science class demonstration went awry.

Mid-Del School District spokeswoman Stacey Boyer says the accident happened Wednesday afternoon at Kerr Middle School.

Fire Department Maj. Brandon Pursell says a 13-year-old girl suffered injuries to her face as a teacher was demonstrating the kinds of flames that can occur when certain chemicals are used. Pursell says officials aren't disclosing the type or severity of the injury.

Pursell says the teacher covered the student with a safety blanket and grabbed a fire extinguisher.

Boyer says the classroom and adjacent corridor were evacuated. There were 10 students in the class.

Pursell says the injured teen was taken to a medical center for treatment but he didn't know if she was still hospitalized.
