Claremore Attorney to Lead Okla. Senate Dems (Nov 08, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Claremore attorney Sen. Sean Burrage has been elected to serve as the next Democratic leader in the Oklahoma Senate.

Burrage was elected to the post Tuesday to fill the leadership post currently held by state Sen. Andrew Rice. Rice recently announced plans to resign his seat and move out of state.

Sen. Jim Wilson of Tahlequah also was seeking the post.

Burrage vowed to avoid partisan politics - but says if legislation comes at the expense of vulnerable Oklahomans "then we'll be fighting to give those individuals a voice in the Senate."

Republicans currently hold a 32-16 majority in the Senate.

Burrage was re-elected without opposition to a second term in the Senate in 2010 and currently serves as assistant Democratic floor leader.
