Cole: Supercommittee a "Terrific Failure" (Nov 21, 2011)

The Congressional debt-cutting “Supercommitee” announced Monday it failed to reach an agreement on how to cut $1.2 trillion from the federal budget. U.S. Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) says that won’t stop reductions to federal spending.

The spending cuts are supposed begin in 2013, taking about $55 billion dollars a year over the next nine years from defense and domestic spending. Cole says he is very disappointed with the lack of results.

"I think it's a terrific failure," Cole said. "We needed to get something done here, and I guess we're going to have to cobble some things together as best we can over the next year and wait for an election to send a pretty clear signal."

Cole said the failure of the process looks bad for Republicans and Democrats in Congress and for President Obama. He said he doesn't support the defense cuts at the level called for in the law... but the Congressman says the huge federal deficit also weakens the country.
