Air Guard Members Deploy (Nov 28, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A group of Oklahoma National Guard airmen are heading to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Six members of the 146th Air Support Operations Squadron departed Monday from Tinker Air Force Base.

The group will serve as a follow-on deployment for other ASOS members who deployed in July. Guard officials say the 63-member unit provides support to troops with the Oklahoma Army National Guard's 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team by calling in air strikes and providing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance to ground commanders.

The squadron was created two years ago to provide tactical air support to ground troops.
