Okla. Senate Leader Supports Teacher Funding (Dec 07, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The leader of the Oklahoma Senate says he supports restoring a stipend for public school teachers who receive National Board Certification.

Senate President Pro Tem Brian Bingman told a group of business leaders on Wednesday that restoring the $5,000 stipend will be one of his priorities during the legislative session that begins in February.

The Sapulpa Republican says the stipend is one of the few "merit pay" programs for teachers that exist in Oklahoma.

New Republican State Superintendent Janet Barresi's budget eliminated the $5,000 annual bonus for National Board Certification recipients as well as the funding for scholarships for teachers to apply for certification.
