Turner Turnpike Acid Spill Prompts Evacuation (Dec 14, 2011)

SAPULPA, Okla. (AP) - Police have ordered an evacuation of a 1-square-mile area of Sapulpa because of an acid spill from a tractor-trailer on the Turner Turnpike.

The Wednesday afternoon hydrochloric acid spill also resulted in the turnpike being closed in both directions between Kellyville and Tulsa.

Tulsa television station KJRH reports Sapulpa police have asked people to leave their homes in the area of the Turner Turnpike to the south, Highway 97 to the east, Andrew Street to the north.

Authorities are concerned about the threat of toxic fumes from the spill.
