Death Row Inmate Attempts Suicide (Dec 19, 2011)

McALESTER, Okla. (AP) — An Oklahoma death row inmate who is to be executed Jan. 5 has been returned to prison after receiving treatment for cuts to his neck in an apparent suicide attempt.

The McAlester News-Capital reports (http://is.gd/7iIx7Z ) that 49-year-old Gary Roland Welch was found bleeding in his cell on Friday. He was returned to prison from a hospital on Sunday.

Oklahoma State Penitentiary Warden Randy Workman says Welch is in stable condition and has expressed remorse for trying to take his own life.

Officials say Welch is in the prison's infirmary unit, where he may be held until his execution.

Welch is to be executed for the 1994 murder of 35-year-old Robert Dean Hardcastle in Miami.
