Weekly Arts and Entertainment Highlights (Dec 22, 2011)

Christmas is here, and museum exhibits, community dinners, and holiday concerts are just a few ways to spend the week.

“The Nativity: 15 - 17th century Etchings, Engravings and Woodcuts” is on display at The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art on St. Gregory’s University campus in Shawnee through January 22nd. The exhibit features over 30 works from 18 different artists, all depicting the birth of Christ. Some of the artists featured include Durer, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens, and Annibale Carracci, and all pieces are from the 1400s through the 1600s. The exhibit is only on display through the winter and is on loan from Mathis Gallery & Conservation Framing in Wisconsin.

2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the Norman Christmas Day Community Dinner. It is open to the public, and takes place at the Norman High School Commons Cafeteria on December 25th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Santa will also make a special appearance to distribute gifts. The dinner is coordinated by St. Michael’s Episcopal Church and depends on community donations and volunteers. Volunteering has become a tradition for many Norman families.

On December 22nd, Sharp Concert Hall of the Catlett Music Center on the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman hosts the 18th Annual Sullivan Family Holiday Concert. The performance begins at 7 p.m. and benefits the Norman Women’s Resource Center, which is a United Way Agency. The Sullivan family has varying musical talents and careers. Tim Sullivan is a country singer, Heather is a singer and songwriter, Stacy has a recording career, and KT is a cabaret singer. The concert is open to the public.

The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in Norman offers complimentary holiday admission as its gift to the community December 27th through the 30th. Two exhibits, “Robert Rauschenberg: Prints from Universal Limited Art Editions, 1962-2008” and “No Heaven Awaits Us: Contemporary Chinese Photography & Video,” close December 30th, and the holidays are the perfect time to check out the new Stuart Wing of the museum and recently re-installed Adkins collection.

There are only a few more chances to see Lyric Theater’s “A Christmas Carol.”

The OG+E Garden Lights at Myriad Botanical Gardens offers complimentary admission Christmas Day.

And Christmas light shows close soon in Yukon, Chickasha, and Midwest City.
