Weekly Arts and Entertainment Highlights (Jan 05, 2012)

The beginning of the New Year is filled with concerts, opportunities to learn about Buddhism through film and classes, and volunteer opportunities.

Pianist Andrew von Oeyen and conductor Joel Levine perform with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic on January 7th at 8:00 p.m. the Civic Center Music Hall in Oklahoma City. The concert titled “Commoners and Kings” features pianist Louis Lortie’s well known and inventive renditions of works by classical composers. The Philharmonic performs Handel’s “Royal Fireworks Music,” Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Russian Easter Overture,” and Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 5”. Andrew von Oeyen has performed with many other orchestral groups including the Philadelphia Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic.

The Oklahoma City Museum of Art screens the documentary “My Reincarnation” on January 5th at 7:30 p.m. as part of its “Reality Check, New Documentaries” series. The film is the culmination of 20 years of work for director Jennifer Fox, and tells the story of high Tibetan Buddhist Master, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu and his son Yeshi. Yeshi embraced the modern world and went against family tradition despite being recognized as the reincarnation of another famous spiritual master at birth. Fox was granted unprecedented access to the Buddhist Master’s life and other icons like the Dalai Lama for the movie.

The Downtown Library in Oklahoma City hosts guitarist Edgar Cruz in concert Sunday, January 8th. Doors to the 46th Star Auditorium open at 1:45 p.m. and the performance begins at 2:00 p.m. This show is open to the public as part of the library’s Second Sunday Concerts series. Cruz plays over 200 concerts each year, and his career spans over three continents including North America, South America, and Europe. Originally from Oklahoma City, Cruz was the first person to obtain a Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance from Oklahoma City University.

The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History holds volunteer orientation classes on Saturday, January 7th from 10 a.m. to Noon and Monday, January 9th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The adult volunteer program is open to individual 16 years of age and older.

The Buddha Mind Monastery in Oklahoma City offers classes in Beginning Zen Meditation and Buddhism every Tuesday beginning January 10th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The classes are open to the public and teach Zen sitting and walking meditation, chanting, and fundamental Buddhist teachings.
