Senate Democrats Promote Infant Insurance (Jan 12, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Democrats in the Oklahoma Senate say they plan to file legislation to require health insurers in the state provide coverage for newborns.

Democratic Leader Sean Burrage of Claremore and Sen. Tom Adelson of Tulsa said Thursday they believe it is wrong for insurers to deny coverage for certain infants because of the possible cost. The Democratic senators say insurance companies should not dictate policy in the state.

Gov. Mary Fallin signed an emergency rule in December that restored "child-only" health insurance plans for Oklahoma youths aged 1-19 whose parents or guardians want policies for kids who are not covered by family plans or Medicaid. But the rule does not cover infants under 1.

The senators say companies that want to write insurance in the state should also insure infants.
