OU President Recommends Smoke-free Campus (Jan 19, 2012)

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - University of Oklahoma President David Boren is recommending that smoking be banned on campus except in two designated areas.

Boren released his recommendations Thursday and says he'll present them to the Board of Regents at its meeting next week.

Boren says he agrees with an advisory committee's recommendation to ban smoking, both indoors and outdoors. But he disagreed with the committee's recommendation to not designate any smoking areas.

Boren says the designated areas are necessary so smokers don't flood nearby off-campus neighborhoods. The president recommends the areas be located in parking lots near Dale Hall and the Lloyd Noble Center.

If approved, the policy won't take effect until July 1. Violators would receive a warning on the first offense, followed by $10 and $50 fines for subsequent offenses.
