Okla. DHS Discusses Performance With Lawmakers (Jan 31, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Officials with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services discussed the agency's performance during a meeting of a Senate budget panel.

The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services heard from agency officials Tuesday during a meeting at the Southern Oklahoma Resource Center in Pauls Valley. The panel also will discuss the performances of the Department of Rehabilitation Services and Department of Veterans Affairs during separate meetings Tuesday in Sulphur.

State lawmakers have targeted DHS for system-wide changes following several high-profile deaths of children in the agency's custody. Longtime DHS Director Howard Hendrick announced last week that he was resigning from the agency, and Steele has promised a national search for his replacement.

The agency receives more than $500 million in state funding annually.
