Okla. Speaker's Water Bill Clears House Panel (Feb 15, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma House Speaker Kris Steele's water bill that sets a statewide goal of keeping Oklahoma's water demand static for the next 50 years has cleared its first legislative hurdle.

The House Agriculture, Wildlife and Environment Committee on Wednesday voted 15-2 to advance the bill to the full House.

The bill sets a statewide goal that Oklahoma consumes no more fresh water in 2060 than it does today. It also creates an advisory panel to make recommendations to the Legislature and governor on how the state could accomplish that goal. It also directs the Oklahoma Water Resources Board to fund pilot projects that promote water conservation.

A study on statewide water use projects Oklahoma's water use is expected to increase by 33 percent by 2060.
