Department of Education Announces Timeline (Feb 23, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A timeline is in place to consider plans to improve 77 Oklahoma schools that the State Department of Education has identified as underperforming in student achievement and graduation rates.

The department said Thursday that improvement plans submitted by the schools will be reviewed starting Feb. 24 and recommendations for improvement will be discussed with each district. The plans will be submitted to the State Board of Education on March 29.

The plans are to be implemented starting in the fall for each school.

Board members and state Superintendent Janet Barresi sought to reassure schools that they do not foresee a state takeover of schools. The plan does - however - include options for separate management of a school or the closing an underperforming school as called for in state law.
