Group Opposed to Okla. ''Personhood'' Rally (Feb 28, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A group of Oklahomans opposed to bestowing personhood to fertilized eggs rallied at the state Capitol Tuesday.

Oklahomans Against the Personhood Act planned to rally Tuesday afternoon at the state Capitol in opposition to the state Senate's passage of a bill that grants the rights of personhood to fertilized human eggs.

Tulsa Republican Sen. Brian Crain, who wrote the bill, says the intent isn't to ban abortions but to send a message that Oklahomans believe life begins at conception. He says the bill is modeled after a 1986 Missouri law that was later determined by the U.S. Supreme Court to be constitutional.

But critics include doctors and others who say the measure could jeopardize reproductive medicine and outlaw certain forms of birth control.
