Judge Grants More Time in Morgan Trial (Mar 23, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A federal judge has granted a request by the former leader of the Oklahoma Senate for more time to request a new trial on a bribery charge.

U.S. District Judge Robin Cauthron granted the request by former Senate President Pro Tem Mike Morgan. Morgan was convicted of bribery on March 5 by a jury that found him not guilty of extortion and mail fraud counts and could not reach a verdict on other counts.

Morgan sought more time to seek a new trial in a motion in which he also asked Cauthron to acquit him on the bribery charge.

In an order, Cauthron says she will wait for federal prosecutors to respond before ruling on that request. She gave Morgan 10 days after she rules to seek a new trial.
