Tornado Hits Woodward, Six Dead (Apr 15, 2012)

At least six people are reported dead following a large tornado that ripped through northwest Oklahoma. Residents of Woodward spent Saturday night watching the sky and television images of tornadoes that danced around their community. But just after midnight Sunday, a funnel cloud touched down hitting homes, an apartment building and a trailer park.

The twister was one of many that scoured the nation’s midsection. Rusty Surette with the American Red Cross says the situation on the ground is serious.

“It’s not a good picture,” Surette said. “It’s, a horrific scene out there, and we are going to make sure we are there to help and support this community in every single way possible.”

Authorities are searching the areas around Woodward and the smaller community of Tangier for victims of the storm. The Oklahoma tornado was one of many across the Midwest and Plains where the risk of life threatening severe weather continues.
