Steele Not Interested in Bond for Repairs (May 25, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma House Speaker Kris Steele says he's not interested in a last-minute offer from the Senate to spend $20 million on repairs to the state Capitol.

Steele said Friday the proposal the night before adjournment did not provide adequate time for consideration and that no one approached him directly to discuss it.

Senate President Pro Tem Brian Bingman sent a letter Thursday to Steele and Gov. Mary Fallin, suggesting a $20 million appropriation to begin the repairs.

Steele said in an email to The Associated Press on Friday that he has no intention to make a "$20 million decision on an offer made on the eve of adjournment."

A proposed $200 million bond issue to repair the Capitol and nearby buildings was shot down Wednesday in the House.
