Coburn: Taxpayer-Funded Conventions a Waste (Jun 04, 2012)

WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) introduced legislation Monday that would prohibit the use of Presidential Election Campaign Funds for party conventions.

Coburn sponsored the legislation with his colleague U.S. Sen. Mark Udall (D-CO).

Coburn said in a statement each of the major political parties received $18.3 million in taxpayer funds to pay for this summer’s Democratic and Republican political conventions.

He said given the current economic conditions, there’s no justification for spending money on “booze, balloons, and confetti.”

If approved, the law would take effect after this election cycle…beginning January 1, 2013.
