Fallin Signs Transportation Funding Bills (Jun 04, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Gov. Mary Fallin has signed transportation legislation that will increase funding for repairing the state roads and structurally deficient bridges.

Fallin signed the legislation Monday at a state Capitol ceremony attended by lawmakers, Department of Transportation officials and private engineering firms who will be involved in the projects.

Among other things, the measure provides enough funding for the Transportation Department to carry out Fallin's plan to repair or replace all 706 structurally deficient bridges on the state highway system by 2019.

In addition, the measure increases funding to the County Improvement for Roads and Bridges program to allow counties to re-use up to 1,800 structural beams from the old Interstate 40 Crosstown Expressway for local bridge replacement projects. Fallin says 280 steel beams have already been shipped to eight communities.
