Anonymous Donation Saves Tulsa Teachers (Jun 05, 2012)

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - The superintendent of Tulsa Public Schools says an anonymous donation of $600,000 will save 15 teacher jobs that were recently eliminated because of a decrease in federal funding.

Superintendent Keith Ballard says an additional 16 or 17 jobs will be saved by keeping vacant administrative positions open. The Tulsa World reports that 75 positions had been eliminated because of the end of federal Jobs Bill funding.

Supporters of Eliot Elementary School raised $42,000 to save the job of one science teacher. Ballard says it's admirable the community stepped up - but that the Legislature should be funding the public schools, not donors.

About 45 jobs are still at risk, and the district says it's searching for funding.
