Democrats Hold Edge in Number of Registered Voters (Jun 11, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The number of registered Republicans and independents continues to grow in Oklahoma, but Democrats still have the advantage when it comes to registered voters.

Figures released Monday by the Oklahoma State Election Board show 46 percent of registered voters in Oklahoma are Democrats, 42 percent are Republicans and 12 percent are independents.

Despite the Democrats' advantage, the recent trend in voter registrations appears to favor Republicans and independents.

The number of registered Democrats has declined by nearly 300 since January while Republicans have added 23,500 voters and independents have picked up more than 6,200 voters.

Ten years ago, Democrats made up nearly 53 percent of registered Oklahoma voters, compared to 36 percent for Republicans and 10 percent for independents.
