Oklahoma AG Issues "Green Dot" Card Scam Warning (Jun 22, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt is warning consumers of a fraud scheme involving Green Dot pre-paid cards.

Consumers deposit money in Green Dot "money pak" cards and use them to pay bills and add money to online accounts.

But Pruitt says scam artists are using the cards to get cash from victims. The scammers warn victims that their electricity will be disconnected if they don't make a payment. They are instructed to place money on the card and provide the "money pak" pin number, allowing scammers to transfer money immediately to another account. Once transferred, the victim's money is lost.

Pruitt says at least three consumers of the East Central Oklahoma Electric Cooperative in Okmulgee have been contacted with the scam. Consumers in other states have also reported being contacted.
