Keetoowah Casino Ordered to Cease Operations (Jul 10, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A federal judge has ordered the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokees to cease operations at its gaming facility July 30 unless it obtains federal trust status for the land in Tahlequah where the casino operates.

Tuesday's order by U.S. District Judge Ronald White lifted a temporary injunction that barred the state from enforcing gaming law violations at the facility. The casino opened in 1986 before the federal government determined whether the facility was on Native American land.

Under state law, casinos on non-American Indian land are illegal.

The decision affirms an agreement the tribe and the state Attorney General office reached last month that requires the Keetoowahs to pay $2 million and cease operations until the land trust issue is resolved.

The Keetoowahs filed an amended trust application Aug. 15.
