Norman Attorney Speaks on Municipal PAC Influence (Jul 24, 2012)

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - The city attorney in Norman says officials can't limit the speech of political groups that want to weigh in on the city's nonpartisan municipal elections.

City attorney Jeff Bryant researched the issue after the Cleveland County GOP PAC endorsed Chad Williams in his bid for city council. Candidates do not list a party affiliation in municipal races.

The Norman Transcript reports that a memo from Bryant says preventing non-candidates from speaking about political party affiliations would violate their rights to free speech.

Bryant says the mailer sent out by the PAC is not a violation of the city charter.
