Creek County Officials Review Fire Investigation (Aug 31, 2012)

SAPULPA, Okla. (AP) - Creek County prosecutors are reviewing an investigation into wildfires that destroyed 376 homes and charred more than 90 square miles.

District Attorney Max Cook told the Tulsa World his office has received reports from the sheriff's office and U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, and at least one suspect has been named.

Investigators believe a discarded cigarette may have caused the fire that started at a home near Oklahoma Highway 48 Aug. 2. A county burn ban was in effect.

The BIA became involved because officials initially thought the house where the fire started was on restricted Native American land. It was later determined that it wasn't, but the agency still submitted a report.

Cook says he'll probably decide whether to file charges or continue the investigation by next week.
