Friday Brings Severe Storms to Oklahoma (Sep 07, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Severe thunderstorms with strong winds knocked down trees and disrupted electric power to homes and businesses in parts of Oklahoma.

A severe storm developed quickly Friday afternoon in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, dumping heavy rain and unleashing a 76 mph wind gust at Tinker Air Force Base. A large tree was blown onto a road in southwest Oklahoma City and some power poles were damaged.

Other severe storms were reported in eastern Oklahoma, where authorities say a wind gust of unknown speed blew off the metal siding of an outdoor garage and damaged several roofs and trees in Nowata County.

Public Service Company of Oklahoma reported 17,790 customers without power, and at least 2,885 Oklahoma Gas and Electric customers were without electricity.
