Senate Committee Discusses Unused Food Laws (Oct 26, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A pile of unserved food from a local restaurant was dumped on a table before a legislative committee to underscore the point that Oklahomans are going hungry needlessly.

The founder of an Oklahoma City-based nonprofit that collects unused food from local restaurants and distributes it to needy families made the point on Thursday during a meeting of the House Human Services Committee.

The panel met to discuss how lawmakers might change laws or administrative rules to make it easier to collect unused food and distribute it to the hungry in the state.

Joey Abbo is the founder of the NEEDS Foundation, which already has established connections with area restaurants including Panera Bread and the Deep Fork Grill.
