Republican State Legislative Presence Expands (Nov 07, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Republican leaders in the Oklahoma House and Senate will be forced to wrangle with an even broader range of conservative ideology after the GOP extended its majorities in both chambers of the Legislature.

Based on unofficial results after Tuesday's elections, Republicans picked up a net gain of four seats in the Senate and now have a 36-12 advantage. The GOP also had a net gain of three seats in House and now controls that chamber by a 72-29 margin. Both advantages are the largest ever for Republicans in the Legislature.

The growing caucus in both chambers likely will pose challenges for Gov. Mary Fallin and House and Senate leaders, who will be forced to reach a consensus with a caucus that includes even more far-right members.
