Indian Times: Native Americans and the Election (Nov 09, 2012)

The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI)  offered a webinar Thursday on what Indian Country’s votes did in last week’s election, and those results were fascinating. One of the speakers on the webinar was Oklahoma attorney Arvo Mikkanen (Kiowa/Comanche).  Mikkanen is president of the Oklahoma Indian Bar Association, who ran a voter call in help line on election day.  Mikkanen talks about the Oklahoma Indian Bar Association (OIBA) and how Native Americans are getting out the vote. For more information on the OIBA, go to their Facebook page.  To find information on the NCAI go to www.ncai.org.

This week the Supreme Court declined to hear Kimberly Craven's appeal of the $4.3 billion dollar settlement won by the late Elouise Cobell for Native American Land Trust beneficiaries.  The other three people with appeals agree to drop them if their attorney's fees and expenses were paid, the plaintiff's attorneys agreed to do so.  The Cobell Settlement is closer to being dispersed. To find more information on this go to www.indiantrust.com.
