State Rep. Seeks Opinion in Speaker-Elect Authority (Nov 15, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A state representative from Oklahoma City is asking for an opinion from the attorney general's office on the authority of the House speaker-elect to spend money from the House budget.

Republican Rep. Mike Reynolds sent a letter Wednesday to Attorney General Scott Pruitt seeking a formal opinion as House Speaker-elect T.W. Shannon is expected to announce his staff this week.

Shannon was formally elected by the Republican caucus earlier this month to serve as speaker for the legislative session beginning in February. He was unopposed and will be formally elected by the full House in January.

But Reynolds questioned whether Shannon has the authority to authorize spending before his formal election and says there is ``ambiguity in the Constitution that needs to be clarified.''
