Fallin Says States Need Budget Flexibility (Dec 06, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin says states need more flexibility in how they spend federal revenue as the nation approaches the federal fiscal cliff's combination of steep spending cuts and tax hikes.

Fallin and other members of the National Governors Association's executive committee met with President Barack Obama and other federal officials in Washington this week. Fallin said Thursday the governors told the president they will need more flexibility in how they spend federal funds if the spending cuts occur early in 2013.

Fallin says all states are different and each has unique circumstances concerning its budget, unemployment rate and economy. But mandates require states to handle federal funds in certain ways.

She says if funds are cut, states will need flexibility in allocating what is left to maintain public services.
